About

the band

We are a group of talented, high-energy jazz musicians from across the lower mainland, with a passion for keeping the music and sound of the “Big Band” alive in our communities.

A repertoire ranging from the 40’s swing era dance classics to modern big band arrangements will start toes tapping, get people on their feet, and help make any occasion memorable.

MFBB has performed for community, corporate and charity events, as well as private parties, weddings, seniors dances, social clubs, church events (Jazz Vespers) and Concerts-in-the-Park.

Musical styles

Styles under the Jazz umbrella, such as: Jazz Waltz, Be-bop, Swing, Big Band, Latin, Rock, Funk and other contemporary styles.

History

The original band "Third Stage" was reorganized in 2010 by Doug Knight and Casey Blackwell, and once music director Christian (Findlay) Morrison was hired, the rebuilt band became stronger than ever. A change of name occurred in 2011 from Third Stage to the Mighty Fraser Big Band, named after the Fraser River - "...a powerful force in the Lower Mainland".

The band's rhythmic styling is regularly honed at every Wednesday rehearsal. As of Sept. 2019, MFBB is under the direction of Kris Covlin, who brings his own talent and high energy to the mix. Kris is a professional saxophonist living in Vancouver, BC, who is actively involved in the community, educating local musicians and promoting live music in the form of frequent concerts throughout the year.
